Act Now: Tell oil and gas companies to stay out of the Arctic Refuge!

The Trump administration is trying to auction off the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge piece by piece – endangering hundreds of species who call the Arctic home.

The Arctic Refuge and its Coastal Plain provide vital habitat for the Porcupine Caribou Herd, migratory birds, and especially the Southern Beaufort Sea population of polar bears, who are currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

If oil companies move forward with placing bids on Arctic habitat, those animals could be harassed, harmed and displaced by an industrial invasion of noisy construction and pollution.

The Trump administration will announce the winning bids on June 5. It’s critical that we speak up right away and let potential buyers know that protecting the Arctic Refuge and its wildlife is more important than the slim chance of short-term profits!

Dear Decision-Makers,

I strongly oppose any oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and urge oil and gas companies to abandon any plans to pursue development there.

The Arctic Refuge is the crown jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Home to over 300 animal species, the Refuge harbors the greatest biodiversity of any protected area north of the Arctic Circle. Four species protected by the Endangered Species Act (ESA) depend on the Refuge: spectacled eiders, ringed seals, bearded seals and one of the most imperiled polar bear populations in the world, the Southern Beaufort Sea population.

Drilling in the Arctic Refuge threatens fragile Arctic ecosystems, accelerates climate damage, and puts Indigenous communities and subsistence traditions at risk.  The Refuge’s 1.5 million-acre coastal plain is its biological heart. The Coastal Plain is vital habitat for wildlife, including the Porcupine Caribou Herd and designated critical denning habitat for polar bears, and its industrialization would cause irreversible harm.

Drilling in the Arctic Refuge is fiscally irresponsible and widely unpopular. All major oil and gas companies stayed out of the two mandated lease sales under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which reflected broad public opposition and the growing recognition that Arctic drilling is a losing bet.

The Arctic Refuge is no place for oil and gas development. Please stand up for wildlife and keep drilling out of the Arctic Refuge.
