Trump’s offshore oil plan is out. Speak up to protect our coasts today!

The Trump administration recently proposed a huge expansion in oil and gas drilling in protected areas along the coasts of California, Alaska, and Florida. That’s in addition to offshore areas already being pumped for oil and natural gas.

This new offshore drilling expansion is being proposed as the administration has already tried to crush most forms of clean energy, including wind and solar power, all while claiming the existence of an “energy emergency” they themselves are feeding. Now the administration is exposing even more habitats and communities to the risk of oil pollution.

The Department of the Interior is now taking public feedback on the draft 5-Year Offshore Drilling Plan. This is your chance to protect coastal ecosystems and communities from threats like pollution and deadly oil spills.

Dear BOEM official,

As a resident of [impacted town/city, state, if appropriate] and as someone who cares deeply about our coastal ecosystems and communities, I strongly oppose the draft 5-year offshore drilling plan. Specifically, I urge you to reject the proposed expansion of drilling off the coast of California, new waters in Alaska, and the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.

We don’t need to go back very far to find very real and very recent evidence of the massive human, economic and environmental risks of offshore drilling. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon Spill in the Gulf of America, the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, killed 11 workers and directly impacted five states.

This spill poisoned 1,300 miles of coastline and caused billions of dollars of economic damage to the fishing and tourism industries and coastal economies in the Gulf. Additionally, hundreds of thousands of marine mammals, birds, sea turtles, fish and other marine life were killed as a result. As that disaster demonstrated so clearly, oil spills know no boundaries, putting even the coasts of non-drilling states at risk.

It's also clearly not needed, as demonstrated by the fact that last summer Congress already approved a massive expansion of offshore drilling in places where it already exists – namely, the central and western Gulf of America as well as Cook Inlet in Alaska. In fact, many of the leases which already exist aren’t currently being used. Additionally, the argument that this is desperately needed is contradicted by the fact that the U.S. has produced record amounts of oil over the last couple of years and by the fact that the Administration seems to have no interest whatsoever in pursuing all forms of energy, including wind and solar.

This is not – and should not be – a partisan issue. There is massive bipartisan opposition to offshore drilling in states from Florida to California, and including Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia for a reason.

There is simply no reason to pursue more drilling in protected areas with significant other wildlife, ecological, and economic values. So again, we urge you to reject this proposed expansion of drilling in these new targeted areas off the coasts of California, Alaska, and the Eastern Gulf of America.
