We need to speak up today: The Trump administration is proposing massive changes that will gut the Endangered Species Act.

The ESA is our most effective tool for saving animals from extinction, but it’s only as effective as the regulations that implement it – and it’s those regulations that the Trump administration is targeting.

The proposed rollbacks would make it easier for federal agencies to greenlight destructive projects like mining, drilling, and logging without fully assessing their impact on threatened or endangered animals or their habitat.

The government would effectively be ignoring whether vulnerable animals could be pushed closer to extinction by rushed new projects.

The public comment period is now open. We’re calling on all defenders to raise our voices in support of the ESA and against destructive giveaways that threaten our natural world!

Greetings,

As an American who cares deeply about protecting imperiled species and their habitats, I’m writing to express my opposition to the new regulations that would gut the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and I urge the Trump administration to withdraw these proposals. If they are finalized, the proposed regulations could harm imperiled species across the country, undercutting decades of conservation efforts.

The ESA is America’s single greatest tool to prevent species extinction and preserve this country’s biodiversity. Approximately 99% of the U.S. species listed under the Act are still with us—including some of America’s most iconic species, like the bald eagle—and hundreds of those species are on the road to recovery. At a time when one million species worldwide are threatened with extinction by 2050, we should be strengthening the laws and policies that protect imperiled species and their habitat, like the ESA. Unfortunately, the Trump administration is proposing the opposite.

If finalized, the proposed regulations would prioritize green-lighting destructive projects over protecting species at risk of extinction. These proposed rollbacks would make it easier for federal agencies to approve roads, pipelines, mines, and logging projects without fully assessing their impact on threatened and endangered species or their habitats. They would also make it more difficult to extend protections to threatened species, which would delay lifesaving action until a species' population is so small it may be challenging to save. Additionally, the proposed regulations would allow economic interests to influence decisions about which species and critical habitats warrant federal protection.

Decades of polling have shown strong bipartisan support for the ESA with approximately 84% of Americans supporting it, including me. That’s why I oppose these damaging rollbacks and urge the Trump administration to withdraw these proposals. We must prioritize our cherished wildlife and work to strengthen, not weaken, our nation’s best tool for helping to prevent extinction and putting species on the road to recovery.
