The badly misnamed “Fix Our Forests Act” (FOFA) is poised to give the Trump Administration additional authority to vastly expand logging in protected areas under the guise of reducing wildfires.

FOFA is another step that gives the Administration more power to facilitate reckless logging despite its consequences for habitat that is vital to imperiled species. And that’s not all: The bill could actually make wildfires even worse by destroying fire-resilient old-growth trees.

Your senator sits on the Senate Agriculture Committee, and on Tuesday, October 21, they’ll cast a key vote to decide the future of FOFA. They need to hear from you!

I care deeply about protecting our country’s forests and public lands and as your constituent, I urge you to oppose S. 1462, the so-called “Fix Our Forests Act” or FOFA. If passed, this bill would open public lands to massive logging projects by undermining critical conservation laws, eliminating science-based decision making, and blocking judges from granting relief when actions are illegal.

In addition to what’s happening in Congress, I am greatly concerned about the Trump Administration’s recent actions that will allow for reckless logging in our forests with little to no accountability. After artificially inflating timber targets in the reconciliation bill, repealing the Roadless Rule, rescinding long-standing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulations, and even attempting to change the definition of harm under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), we cannot give further power to the Administration to log our forests and make it harder to hold agencies accountable for illegal conduct.

S. 1462 opens our cherished public lands to immense logging projects under the guise of protecting communities from wildfire. If this harmful bill is passed, it would remove key environmental protections and allow the logging industry to destroy wildlife habitat, including vital habitat for endangered species, and increase the risk of fire by facilitating logging the most fire-resilient old growth trees. Additionally, this bill would allow the Trump Administration to ignore science and community input and permanently roll back bedrock environmental laws like the ESA and NEPA that are needed to hold the Administration accountable.

As we continue to feel the devastating impacts of climate inaction, we must protect our forests and make them more resilient, not give the Trump Administration license to cut them to the ground.

Again, I strongly urge you to oppose S. 1462.
