Comment Today: Protect public lands and their wildlife!

245 million acres of America’s public lands are overseen by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM)– lands that are home to a wide array of birds, fish, deer, and other animals, including some of our most imperiled species.

For too long, the BLM has put industry first on these lands, threatening habitat for wildlife. Then, under President Biden, the BLM finalized the Public Lands Rule, which provides clear direction to consider conservation in decision-making and begins to restore balance to public land management.

Now the Trump administration has released its proposal to roll back this important rule. If that happens, the BLM will return to an outdated and extraction-first approach to land management that prioritizes development over long-term benefits for communities and wildlife that depend on these lands.

We need you: Speak up today and urge the Bureau of Land Management to protect habitats and the long-term health of these important lands with the Public Lands Rule!

Dear Bureau of Land Management:

I urge you to retain the Public Lands Rule and strongly oppose the proposed rule rescission. Finalized last year, the rule marked a critical shift in BLM management practices, rebalancing the agency’s focus from industrial use to its equally important responsibility to sustainably manage wildlife and our natural resources.
 
For more than 40 years, the BLM has prioritized resource extraction over other uses on public lands that are home to thousands of species, including those on an extinction trajectory like the sage-grouse, desert tortoise, and black-footed ferret. Some species exist on BLM lands and nowhere else in the world.

By providing modern management tools, the Public Lands Rule was beginning to bring balance to BLM's approach and elevate conservation. The rule was helping to sustain the nation's iconic open landscapes of the West that offer refuge for wildlife, provide public access to nature, and safeguard innumerable stories of human experiences on the land. Rescinding the rule would return land management to a lopsided, extraction first approach that overlooks the vital importance of sustaining healthy ecosystems. Moreover, by rescinding the rule, the BLM is ignoring the reality that development-focused practices have left our public lands in substandard condition, a situation compounded by factors such as climate change and chronic drought.

Ninety-two percent of the comments submitted on the draft Public Lands Rule were in support, reflecting overwhelming public endorsement. Reversing this rule now would undermine years of public engagement and widespread support for balanced, modernized land management.

I implore you not to repeal the Public Lands Rule, which is essential to sustaining healthy ecosystems on federal lands for both wildlife and future generations.
