Congress is about to execute a power grab that would politicize how public lands are managed.

Federal agencies like the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service are charged with creating plans to manage federal lands and engage a variety of stakeholders to consider how those plans impact wildlife, including especially vulnerable species.

But now some members of Congress are trying to seize that planning authority using the Congressional Review Act (CRA). If their power grab is successful, plans that took years of public input, analysis and community engagement to build will be erased only to be replaced by uncertainty and more giveaways to private industry.

This is the latest and most urgent attempt to replace science and community input with stark political interests. Before the House of Representatives votes on September 3rd, make sure your representative hears that you oppose this power grab and support keeping public land planning in the hands of agency experts!

I oppose H.J. Res. 104, H.J. Res. 105, and H.J. Res. 106, targeting three Bureau of Land Management (BLM) resource management plans (RMPs), and any other effort to use the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to override federal land management planning.

Land management agencies like the BLM and Forest Service have established processes to develop and update land management plans. These processes involve broad stakeholder engagement and considerations for wildlife, including plants and animals that are highly imperiled. By invoking the CRA, Congress would erase land-use plans that took years of analysis, public input, and community engagement to develop. This risks injecting chaos and uncertainty into land management planning.

Making land management plans vulnerable to Congressional attack is not in the interest of any political party or community. This is not an efficient way to make land management decisions and will only create more chaos and harm communities and wildlife that rely on these public lands.

I urge you to oppose these resolutions and protect the integrity of public lands planning.
