Our nation’s public lands are crucial to the survival of thousands of threatened and endangered species. Without habitat preserved on public lands, many of those species could go extinct.

But Congress could soon mandate the sale of at least two million acres of public lands managed under the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, including Areas of Critical Environmental Concern and critical habitat. If that happens, vital habitat could be paved over and destroyed, and animals would be displaced to make way for development on formerly protected land.

As your constituent, I urge you to work with Senate leadership to remove the provision in the reconciliation bill that would mandate selling off millions of acres of public lands. As someone who cares deeply about protecting our natural heritage, I firmly believe now is the time to stand up for the habitat on which our nation’s wildlife depend. It is shameful to sell off America’s public lands to be developed in a budget bill to temporarily boost revenue and benefit industry.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Budget Reconciliation text mandates the sell-off of at least two million acres of Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands for development in eligible states including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The bill allows for sale of lands that are particularly important for species, including Areas of Critical Environmental Concern, Inventoried Roadless Areas, Wilderness Study Areas and critical habitat.

Selling millions of acres of Americans public lands to the highest bidder would be a huge loss to me and the people nationwide who enjoy the wildlife, recreation and beauty these lands provide. Wildlife would be severely impacted as national forests and BLM lands provide vital habitat for thousands of wildlife species and help save hundreds of animals and plants listed under the Endangered Species Act. Further, public lands hold value beyond their natural beauty and recreational access – they generate billions of dollars in revenue for local, state, and federal governments every year and sustainably boost local economies through tourism and job creation.

We must stop this reckless attempt to privatize public lands, which would open the door to corporate development, restricted access, and the permanent loss of lands we all cherish. This provision to sell off public lands sets a dangerous precedent and must be rejected.

Again, I strongly urge you to work with Senate leadership to remove the devasting provision that mandates selling off our public lands.
