Don’t let Congress abandon wildlife: Urge your legislators to OPPOSE weakening the ESA!

Congress is actively considering legislation that would eviscerate the Endangered Species Act – we’re calling on all wildlife defenders to speak up today!

A bill that would drastically weaken the ESA could receive a House vote later this spring. And the Senate is considering whether to include some of its damaging provisions in legislative packages it is developing. H.R. 1897, Rep. Bruce Westerman’s (R-Ark.) so-called ESA Amendments Act would be more aptly called the Extinction Act, as that’s what it intends to do – drive species already on the brink of extinction over the edge.

As your constituent, I’m contacting you out of urgency. I ask that you commit to opposing all of the recently proposed legislative changes to the Endangered Species Act. To date, at least 20 proposals to weaken the ESA or protections for various imperiled species have been put forward in Congress. I urge you to vote “NO” on all of these measures as well as bills that claim to make changes to federal permitting procedures but in fact are nothing more than a pretext for weakening ESA protections.

I especially urge you to oppose tEndangered Species Act Amendments Act of 2025 (H.R.1897) which would eviscerate the ESA.

While framed as an attempt to “modernize” the ESA,  the bill would instead undermine vital provisions of this important law, placing politics above science to allow wildlife and critical habitat to be harmed even when it compromises the recovery of species from the brink of extinction.

The ESA has broad bipartisan support and popularity among the American electorate, with a 99% success rate in preventing extinction. Eroding the effectiveness of the ESA threatens many species with extinction even as our country is caught in a biodiversity crisis that threatens the future of wildlife and our communities alike.

The changes proposed to the ESA in this Congress are the dangerous ideas at a dangerous time. I urge you to oppose the ESA Amendments Act of 2025 as well as other legislation to deny or reduce ESA protections, including as part of bills on permitting and other broader subjects. Congress should not be weakening this incredibly successful and urgently needed law.
