Save the Greater sage-grouse from disappearing: Submit your comment to the BLM today!

An icon of the American west, the greater sage-grouse, is slowly disappearing.

It’s not too late to turn things around. The Bureau of Land Management is asking the public to comment on their draft plans to protect greater sage-grouse. Specifically, they’re considering designating Areas of Critical Environmental Concern.

Designating ACECs would provide stronger conservation for sage-grouse habitats and give the bird a stronger foundation for recovery. We need to act quickly to save these birds!

Dear Bureau of Land Management:

Thank you for developing a draft plan for better conservation of the Greater sage-grouse. I urge you to adopt plan amendments that provide strong protections to the sage-grouse’s habitat. The final plan amendments should institute a consistent management approach across the sage-grouse’s range that aggressively protects the last remaining intact habitat and limits disturbance. The preferred alternative (#5) is too weak and is inadequate to curb long-term sage-grouse declines.

Specifically, I ask that the final plan amendments do the following:

•	Protect a 5-mile zone around all sage-grouse leks where most sage-grouse nest and raise broods.

•	Designate a network of Areas of Conservation Concern across the range as a way to protect core and connectivity habitats.

•	Recommend a mineral withdrawal for all priority habitats. This will help assure that undue levels of disturbance will not occur in these key habitats.

•	Institute a ‘net conservation gain’ standard for compensatory mitigation to incentivize avoiding disturbance.

The Sagebrush Sea – the sagebrush dominated ecosystems that blanket the interior west – is imperiled and at a tipping point. It is the home to the Greater sage-grouse and hundreds of other at-risk species including the pygmy rabbit that is currently under review for listing under the Endangered Species Act. It is very important to me that this beautiful and wildlife-rich biome does not decline so much that we cannot recover it and conserve the rich tapestry of native plants and wildlife that live there.
