Help stop strip mining from harming wildlife in the Okefenokee Refuge!

The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is home to over 1,000 species – but Twin Pines Minerals, a giant mining corporation, is pushing to break ground on a massive strip-mining project right next door.

I’m reaching out to urge the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GA EPD) to reject Twin Pines Minerals’ applications for permits to break ground on the first phase of a roughly 8,000-acre mining project next to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service—the land manager whose resources stand to be adversely affected—continues to express grave misgivings and expects the project to impact not only the hydrological integrity, but the wilderness character and recreational value of its lands. Twin Pines has not overcome these critiques and failed to adequately prove its case. The permits cannot be issued as described.

The Okefenokee refuge is home to over a thousand species and records as many as 700,000 visits per year. The refuge is poised to become the first World Heritage Site in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Projects that stand to diminish the swamp’s function and overall integrity cannot be permitted to proceed.

I ask that Georgia EPD reject the permits required for Twin Pines Minerals to move forward with this mining project, which plainly stands to endanger wildlife and the local communities who depend on the refuge.
