Anti-wildlife members of Congress have added a total of 15 dangerous policy riders to the House FY2024 Interior Appropriations Bill. They’re piling up this legislation with riders that undermine the Endangered Species Act and aim to block or deny critically needed protections for species on the verge of extinction.

As one of your constituents and someone who cares deeply about our country’s wildlife heritage, I’m writing to urge you to stand up for endangered species and against extinction by opposing all of the anti-Endangered Species Act riders in the FY2024 Interior Appropriations bills. None of these riders should be included in final FY2024 spending legislation approved by Congress. If they are, I urge you to vote NO on any final 2024 spending bill that includes endangered species riders.

Our planet is facing a catastrophic biodiversity crisis as wildlife populations around the world are crashing at alarming rates. In fact, scientists warn that one million plant and animal species could face extinction by 2050. The ESA, which is under attack by anti-wildlife members of Congress, is the strongest and most effective U.S. law for preventing extinction. It has helped prevent over 95% of the species it protects from going extinct, including the bald eagle, Florida manatee, California condor, black-footed ferret and gray wolf.

The House FY24 Interior Appropriations bill, H.R. 4821, includes 15 damaging anti-ESA riders. The riders block essential ESA protections and could mean the difference between extinction and survival for species including the lesser prairie chicken, dunes sagebrush lizard, northern long-eared bat, and the North Atlantic right whale. Additionally, the Senate Interior appropriations bill, S. 2605, still includes a rider prohibiting ESA protections for the imperiled greater sage-grouse.

Protecting the ESA protects our nation’s wildlife and reflects America’s ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation and habitat. We need the ESA - more than 1600 plant and animal species in the U.S. are listed as threatened or endangered under the ESA, with thousands more likely to need protections. The ESA is the lynchpin of the nation’s commitment to stopping extinction and must not be undermined.

As the FY24 Interior Appropriations bill is finalized, I again ask you to oppose all ESA riders, vote NO on any final 2024 federal funding legislation that includes them, and work to ensure that the survival of endangered species and this critical conservation law are not undermined in final FY2024 spending legislation.
