Protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from Big Oil!

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to polar bears, migratory birds, caribou and many more animals – and we need your help to protect them all from Big Oil!

President Biden recently passed an executive order to permanently protect the Arctic Refuge from oil and gas drilling, but our work isn’t over yet! The only way to fully stop any oil and gas activities from harming the Arctic Refuge’s coastal plain is to repeal the oil and gas provision that was included in the 2017 Tax Cut & Jobs Act!

As your constituent, I write in strong support of restoring protections for the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the crown jewel of our national wildlife refuge system. In particular, I’m asking you to support S. 282 and H.R. 815, two bills that aim to protect the Arctic Refuge.

The Coastal Plain is no place for drilling. It provides vital habitat for a diversity of wildlife including hundreds of species of birds that migrate through all 50 states, wolves, musk oxen and the Porcupine caribou herd, a species intricately woven into the culture and spirituality of the Indigenous Gwich’in Nation. The Coastal Plain is also home to one of the world’s most imperiled polar bear populations, providing critical denning habitat for mother polar bears and their cubs. As climate change melts sea ice, mother bears are forced ashore to den and raise their young cubs. Any oil and gas activities in the Coastal Plan are incompatible with the survival of this iconic species.

Drilling in the Arctic Refuge is wildly unpopular. Two-thirds of Americans oppose drilling and six of the biggest U.S. banks have ruled out financing oil and gas exploration in this wildlife oasis. Not only that, but the January 6th lease sale generated just .67% of the $1.88 billion in revenue projected by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is no place for oil and gas drilling. Please support S. 282 and H.R. 815, the Arctic Refuge Protection Act and any legislative efforts to eliminate the drilling program and protect this sacred landscape once and for all.
